The Plumbing Game!

There are many things about owning a fun home, but learning about plumbing is probably not one. It often stresses homeowners out because they only know about it during a plumbing emergency. That doesn’t have to be the case!

Instead of waiting until disaster strikes to learn about the plumbing trade from a technician working overtime, take a little time to know now. These local plumbers have found a way to make the introduction into their industry fun and light-hearted. So come on down and play “The Plumbing Game!”

Door #1: Drain Snakes

The set of tools behind door number one is a family of special devices called drain snakes. Drain snakes come in various shapes and styles, each one intended to deal with a different type of drain or drain clog.

The most minor and easily manageable drain snake is a manual, handheld device inserted into sink and bathtub drains. On one end, a small corkscrew catches clogs of hair when the device is spun, allowing the user to pull the hair and gunk out of a drain that impeded flow.

More giant drain snakes operate off a similar principle but are motorized to deal with serious clogs. A giant sewer main drain snake is designed to power through tough clogs and tree roots to allow wastewater to flow away. In the hands of a professional, all shapes and sizes of drain snakes can be safely used to fix clogged drains.

Door #2: Wrenches

wrenchesThe tools behind door number 2 are everyday tools that plumbers have to make repairs and plumbing installations in their toolbox. The wrenches that plumbers use serve a variety of functions. Some of the main twists in a plumbers tool bag are:
  • Pipe Wrench: Probably the most used wrench in plumbing, pipe wrenches are designed to grab hold of round piping and allow plumbers to tighten metal pipe joints.
  • Adjustable Wrench: Plumbing fixtures require various sizes of wrenches to fit their different parts. A large adjustable wrench can deal with large drain fittings and small nuts part of faucets.
  • Basin Wrench: Basin wrenches are specialty tools that allow plumbers to reach the nuts under a sink easily. For many sink installations, these wrenches are indispensable.

Door #3: Safety Equipment

All jobs need to be performed safely, and plumbing is no different. Keeping safety equipment around is always crucial to a professional plumber. Safe practices start with standard equipment like safety glasses and gloves to give extra grip.

Depending on the job a plumber is working on, the safety equipment will change. While gloves and glasses are standard, some of the other safety equipment that plumbers carry around can include:

  • Test devises to ensure work is up to code
  • Fire extinguishers for copper pipework
  • Coveralls
  • Facemasks
  • Sturdy footwear

This equipment ensures that plumbers keep themselves and their job sites safe, so everyone is happy at the end of the day.
